About working at the Prescott Daily Courier ...
In September 1994, while continuing my education at Prescott College, I contacted Tom Hood, chief photographer with the Prescott Daily Courier, to ask if he would mentor me for a college course in advanced photojournalism. He agreed. At first, I went on assignments with Tom, watching how he worked with his subject matter. After a few assignments, Tom allowed me to handle assignments on my own. Fortunately, I came back to the office with useable images. One day, six months later, my studies complete, Tom's assistant quit her job as staff photographer. That day, Tom offered me the job. Four years later, I left the Courier to return to my home in southern California. Today, more than 7 years after leaving Prescott, I still consider that small southwestern town my home ...

About working with the Los Angeles Times
I moved back to southern California in April 1999, having worked for 4 years at the Prescott Daily Courier, knowing I needed a new challenge. Prior to moving back, I sent more than a dozen resumes to newspapers across California. One paper, the Los Angeles Times, answered. The Times had an opening in its community news division in Thousand Oaks. I don't think I had ever been in Thousand Oaks. Anyhow, I took the job, and for about a year and a half, I worked as a staff photographer with the Times in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley, before being promoted to chief photographer, and working for 2 months in Ventura. Then, 6 months after the Tribune Company bought the the Times Mirror Corp., I and more than 200 photographers, writers, editors, and other staffers, were let go, thanks to corporate downsizing.
